The problem

Two realities. One country. Same day.

India wastes enough food to feed 377 million people every year — while 172 million go to bed hungry. Both facts exist simultaneously. Both are preventable.

The human dimension

One cook. Every morning.
The same question.

Imagine a cook who has worked in a shared accommodation kitchen for five years. Every morning, before anyone else is awake, they arrive and face the same question they have faced every single day.

How many people will eat today?

They do not know. They cannot know. There is no system to tell them. So they look at yesterday's count, think about the day of the week, and make their best guess. Then they cook.

"The most common causes of mess food waste were ordering food from outside without prior intimation, and cooks preparing more food than required — because the availability of students was not checked before cooking began." Journal of Medical Evidence, 2025

This cook is not careless. They are doing exactly what any reasonable person would do with the information available — which is no information at all. In five years, this cook has made approximately 5,475 guesses. Every time the guess was wrong, food went into a bin. Not because anyone wanted it wasted. Because no one built a system to prevent it.

The research conclusion

The cook doesn't waste food out of carelessness.
They waste it because nobody told them
how many people would eat.

Finding consistent across multiple independent academic studies — published 2017 to 2025.

What we discovered

The problem is not food.
It's coordination.

Most kitchens don't know how many people will eat — until it's too late. The food is already cooked. The waste is already on the plate. The money is already lost.

🕐 We bring clarity before cooking begins.
How it works

Three steps.
Zero guesswork.

A simple flow that closes the information gap — the one structural change that transforms a chaotic kitchen into an efficient one.

📈
PGs in Bengaluru are growing rapidly
Bengaluru adds thousands of new tenants every month. More occupancy means higher stakes — kitchen inefficiency that was manageable before becomes costly at scale.
📊 Bengaluru: fastest growing PG market in India
💸
Food costs are rising across India
Pulses, vegetables, oils — all trending up. Every plate prepared for someone who didn't show up is now more expensive to throw away than it was two years ago.
📉 Food inflation: 8–12% avg. over 2 years
♻️
Waste is becoming measurably expensive
PG owners running tight margins are now tracking where rupees go. Kitchens without a clear picture of who is eating are losing money silently — meal after meal, day after day.
💡 Avg. ₹6,000–₹10,000/month wasted per PG
Why this matters now

The cost of guessing
just went up.

The kitchens that adapt early will run smarter.
Early adopters are already seeing the difference — clearer numbers, less uncertainty, and food budgets that actually make sense. The window to get ahead of this is now.

FAQ

Common questions.
Straight answers.

What is WasteZeroFood?
WasteZeroFood is a meal management app for Paying Guest (PG) accommodations. It helps PG owners, caretakers, cooks, and tenants coordinate daily meals — reducing food waste and saving ₹6,000–₹10,000 every month.
Is WasteZeroFood free?
Tenants, cooks, and caretakers use the app for free — always. PG owners pay ₹699/month (Starter, up to 30 tenants) or ₹999/month (Growth, 30+ tenants). A 21-day free trial with all features is available — no credit card required.
Do I need to download an app from the Play Store or App Store?
No. WasteZeroFood is a PWA (Progressive Web App). Open app.wastezerofood.com in your browser and tap "Add to Home Screen" — it installs like a native app on Android and iOS without going through any app store.
How do tenants book meals?
Open the app, tap the meal toggle for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner, and confirm. Takes under 10 seconds. Bookings lock automatically before cooking starts (cutoff time set by your PG).
How does the cook know how many plates to prepare?
Once the caretaker confirms tomorrow's menu, the cook receives the exact plate count for each meal — automatically. No WhatsApp messages, no guessing. The cook sees a clear number before the stove is lit.
What if a tenant forgets to book?
The app sends reminder notifications before the booking cutoff. If they miss it, the meal can't be booked online for that slot. The tenant can speak directly to the caretaker for any exception.
How do I add my tenants to the app?
Copy the join link from your owner dashboard and share it via WhatsApp. Tenants open the link, verify their phone number with an OTP, and are instantly added to your PG — no manual data entry needed.
Can tenants mark themselves as absent for multiple days?
Yes. Tenants can mark specific dates as absent — all meal bookings for those dates are automatically cancelled and the cook's count is updated in real time.
Is my data safe?
Yes. WasteZeroFood uses HTTPS encryption, JWT authentication, and OTP-based login. No passwords are stored. Your data is never sold or shared with third parties for marketing. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I contact support?
Email: support@wastezerofood.com · WhatsApp: +91 9508287279. We respond within 3 business days. Refund requests are acknowledged within 24 hours.

The failure causing institutional kitchen waste is one of the most solvable problems in India's food system — it requires no new technology and no difficult behavior change. Just one thing: a system that closes the information gap between the cook and the people they cook for. That system is now live.

This problem deserves more attention. Share it.
